Karen Adam MSP Welcomes Poverty-Related Attainment Gap Reaching Lowest Level on Record

SNP Investment is making a real difference for children in Banffshire and Buchan Coast.

New national figures show the poverty-related attainment gap in Scottish education has fallen to its lowest level on record, with pupils achieving record-high levels of literacy and numeracy across all stages.

The statistics highlight continued progress in closing the gap between children from the most and least deprived backgrounds, progress that is being felt in classrooms across Banffshire and Buchan Coast, where families, pupils and staff work hard every day to support learning and aspiration.

Teacher numbers across Scotland have increased again in 2025, meaning Scotland continues to have more teachers per head than any other UK nation, alongside higher average pay. Pupil–teacher ratios remain significantly lower than in England and Wales, and average primary class sizes have reduced compared with previous years, helping to ensure children receive the support and attention they need.

Commenting on the figures, Karen Adam MSP welcomed the news:

“This is really encouraging progress and its welcome news for families across Banffshire and Buchan Coast. Behind these statistics are children gaining confidence, teachers going the extra mile, and communities that believe in the power of education to change lives.

“Too often Scotland’s schools and young people are talked down for political gain, but these figures tell a different story, one of steady improvement, record attainment and a narrowing gap between those from the wealthiest and most deprived backgrounds.

“The Scottish Government’s £1 billion investment in education is making a real difference. It shows what can be achieved when we put fairness, opportunity and our young people at the heart of decision making.

“There is always more to do, but this progress matters. I will continue to stand up for the pupils, parents and educators in our local area to make sure every child, no matter their background, has the chance to thrive.”

The SNP remains committed to building on this progress and ensuring education continues to be a powerful force for equality, opportunity and social justice for current and future generations.
